Water, foam, gas, powder or aerosol is selected for fire class, fuel load, occupancy, acceptable collateral damage, enclosure integrity, temperature and recovery needs.
Warehouses require analysis of height, storage arrangement, racks and commodity category. Data rooms and archives also require evacuation, power isolation, enclosure integrity and safe agent removal.
Water systems require design density, operating area, flow, pressure, pipe sizes, pumps and water storage. Gaseous systems require concentration, agent quantity, discharge network, discharge time, pressure relief and leakage assessment.
Hydraulic or specialist calculations connect the risk to the actual network. Later changes to routes, sprinklers, pumps, tanks or room layout require verification rather than assumption.
Automatic release is coordinated with fire detection, warning, ventilation, process equipment and access control. Confirmation, delay, manual release, inhibit and abort functions are defined by the design.
Before handover, networks, valves, pumps or cylinders, status signals, standby power and the full cause-and-effect are tested and recorded.
